Thanks to Smokemonster for the heads up

Lance Reddick sat down with Usmagazine.com to discuss his guest appearance on Lost (airs Wednesday on ABC), his current role on FOX drama Fringe and his years playing Lieutenant Daniels on the critically acclaimed The Wire, which ended its run in 2008.

Us: President Barack Obama has said his favorite show is The Wire. Have you gotten an invite to the White House?
LR: No, I didn't. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Us: Are you an Obama supporter?
LR: Oh, yeah. I would love to meet him.

Us: You worked with J.J. Abrams on Fringe and The Wire. So did you have to audition for Fringe?
LR: I auditioned three times, which is similar to my experience with The Wire.

Us: Do you know how long you'll be on Lost?
LR: It's a recurring role; it's literally episode-to-episode. So you never know how much you're going to be on. Unlike Oz, when you read that you die, you're dead...on Lost, that doesn't matter. You could keep coming back, in flashbacks.

Us How was traveling back and forth while shooting two shows?
LR: I shot Fringe in New York, then flew to Hawaii for Lost and then flew right back to New York. That was quite a week! [Laughs.] I worked every single day.

Us: How did you end up in the Jay-Z and Beyonce video for "Bonnie & Clyde" ?
LR: Well, Jay-Z and the director were big fans of The Wire. They requested me specifically. I didn't know who he was at first. And when I told my daughter, she just rolled her eyes and said, 'Oh dad!' Then after I did the video, I see there's a billboard in Times Square with Jay-Z, I see Beyonce on the cover of Vibe. [Laughs.] I was really out of touch!

Us: What's your weirdest fan encounter?
R: The Wire fans get crazy. [Laughs.] I don't know what it is...I've had women come up to me and...how do I put this naturally? I'm not a player, so I don't really know what to do with that! I was a shy and nerdy kid. It's one of those things where -- even though the way women relate to me has changed dramatically [since] my mid-20s -- it really never quite goes away.

Us: Do you ever read the fan blogs? Your shows all have cult followings.
LR: I read all these things about my character on Lost! I think I tried to once. And I thought, 'This is too much work.'

Us: It seemed like you were suddenly stripping down on a lot on The Wire as the series progressed. How did that happen?
LR: [Producers] asked during a love scene with [state's attorney] Rhonda Pearlman (Deirdre Lovejoy) if I minded taking my shirt off. I said no, took my shirt off and -- I hate putting it like this -- but apparently the female crew members liked it! Whenever I was at home [in future episodes], they kept asking, 'Do you mind taking your shirt off?" So, it became, like, the thing.

Us: That must have been very gratifying.
LR: It was embarrassing in the moment that they made the request. Then after that, it is what it is.

Prior to this past two weeks’ one-two punch of “316” and “The Life And Death Of Jeremy Bentham,” Lost has aired Jack episodes and Locke episodes back-to-back three times. It happened twice in Season One: With “Walkabout” (in which Locke hunts boar and we learn about his handicap) and “White Rabbit” (in which Jack picks up his father’s body in Australia, and on the island takes responsibility for leading the castaways), then with “Deus Ex Machina” (in which Locke meets his biological mother and father, and makes a series of decisions that lead to Boone’s death) and “Do No Harm” (in which Jack gets married to a woman whose life he saved, and on the island fails to save Boone’s life). And last season we had the one-two of “Something Nice Back Home” (about Jack’s appendicitis and his deteriorating life off the island) and “Cabin Fever” (about Locke’s boyhood and his arrival at Jacob’s cabin).

Thanks to Pierce for the following.

I'm not going to write too much tonight about the mythology implications of last night's episode of Lost. Partly because we knew the general shape of what was going to happen--minus the little bit about Locke coming back to life, which answers our question from the last LDG--and partly because we can speculate on that in the comments. But mostly because I want to talk about how awesome Terry O'Quinn is.

    "All the men are dead."

That phrase, on the last panel of the first page, pretty much sums up the entirety of writer Brian K. Vaughan’s now completed series, “Y: The Last Man” published on DC’s Vertigo imprint.

Vaughan and artists Pia Guerra and José Marzán Jr. won an Eisner award in 2008 for best Series for “Y: the Last Man,” and Vaughan, one of the head writers of the ABC TV series “Lost,” also won an Eisner Award for Best Writer in 2005 for his work on this and other series.

Thanks to roundabritt for the heads up.

You may think that Lost is about time travel, faith versus reason, life choices, or a battle to determine the fate of the world, but really, it's about babies: How are they born? Who are their parents? What do their names mean? More often than not, they’re born into incomplete families; other times, there is an abusive or neglectful parent who haunts them. Sometimes, their parents die. This season we’ve met Desmond and Penny’s kid, Charlie, and Dr. Pierre Chang’s son, neither of whom is cloaked in death. Does this represent a meaningful break from the past, or are there heaps of tragedy lying ahead? Who cares, we just love the precious little faces of newborns!

    LA Times about Lance Reddick

Lance Reddick doesn't get to smile a lot on the job. As federal agent Phillip Broyles in Fox's hit drama “Fringe," he is icy -- and possibly sinister -- as the head of an interagency team investigating a pattern of bizarre, deadly incidents. Flip the channel and you might also catch the Baltimore-born-and-raised actor in his recurring role as the stern and smartly dressed Matthew Abaddon, whose last name may be a fearful omen for the survivors of the plane crash of ABC's “Lost." And he was rarely happy in his best-known role as the ambitious Lt. Cedric Daniels in HBO's "The Wire," where his character was trapped between the political miasma of the Baltimore Police Department and the never-ending wave of drug dealers wreaking havoc in the inner city. Given his strait-laced gallery of characters, it's almost surprising to see Reddick flash a real smile away from the cameras. In fact, he's almost unrecognizable from his on-screen personas, appearing younger, less worldly and a bit self-conscious. During a recent interview at his manager's office, he apologized to a photographer who was directing him: "I'm sorry, I'm not terribly visual," he said quietly. But Reddick's modesty cannot stop him from acknowledging that he's on a hot streak. In addition to bouncing between two hot dramas, he's also doing voice-overs for Cadillac commercials and is planning to revive a music career.

"I went from being on one of the most critically acclaimed shows on television to one of the hottest shows on television."

"Lost" executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof said they felt very fortunate to have brought the fearsome-looking actor into the fold of their spooky serialized hit.

"One of the things we really gravitated toward was that Lance is very scary-looking, and he's a very intensive actor who also has this incredible charisma," said Lindelof.

Added Cuse: "What he does incredibly well is deliver exposition, and the audience isn't aware of it. That's an incredibly rare skill to find in an actor."

But even with his career flourishing, Reddick remains wary of the fickle nature of the business.

"As I watch the industry and see what it took me to get where I am," said Reddick, "I am more aware how precarious my position is. There's no such thing as a holding pattern."

But Reddick does concede there's an upside to being in demand and recognized by fans. "Sometimes it's fun. I do get caught up in it."

He approaches his work with a dedication honed at Yale University's drama school: "I'm an artist at heart. I feel that I'm very good at what I do. When I went to drama school, I knew I was at least as talented as other students, but because I was a black man and I wasn't pretty, I knew I would have to work my butt off to be the best that I would be, and to be noticed."

After graduation, he enjoyed some success landing guest or recurring roles on "Oz," "CSI: Miami" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." He also appeared in several movies, including "I Dreamed of Africa," "The Siege" and "Great Expectations," but it was his searing portrayal as Daniels in "The Wire" that was his breakthrough.

"Nothing will ever top 'The Wire,' " he said. "It was historical. It was black cinema."

He added that playing Daniels was no easy gig.

"He was a real challenge," he said. "I kept him tight -- he was very self-contained and analytical, but he also had a lot of rage."

And the role was no less demanding physically. To prepare, Reddick would work out by punching a body bag -- "I wanted to show a guy who looked like he could go off at any moment."

While critically acclaimed and with a devoted fan base, "The Wire" never managed to draw a large audience.

"I don't want to be impolitic here, but I felt it could have connected with a wider audience," said Reddick. "In the industry, there seemed to be this perception that it was a black show. It wasn't funny or melodramatic. It didn't fit the mold."

But the show and his performance attracted attention.

"He's just a spectacular actor," said Jeff Pinkner, an executive producer of "Fringe." "We needed someone in that part who had strength, who looked like they were holding their cards close to the vest. But he also has a deep emotional wellspring. He's generous."

Reddick, who calls Los Angeles home but lives for now in New York, where "Fringe" is shot, is eager for more doors to open. He's in "Tennessee," an upcoming movie with Mariah Carey. A classically trained musician, he's also developing a jazz album.

"I really don't take any of this for granted," he said. "It makes me evaluate more what's really important in life, and it makes me work harder. You either get better, or you don't progress."

There's a very little spoiler left out in this post. So don't click the link if you don't want to read it in the full article.

Thanks to Stargazer for the following.
    Hey all...

I was playing the PC game "Nancy Drew: Danger By Design" the other day when I noticed this in the game. The object of the game is to solve a mystery, and I needed to contact a person (Hugo Butterly) using my in-game phone. I was surprised to see two extra phone numbers listed underneath his...both relevant to LOST.

The first number is obviously the infamous 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42, while the owner's name is Anne-Lucie Croix, an obvious allusion to Ana Lucia Cortez. The second number repeats "108 00" like the timer in the Swan Station. The
owner is Pace Carrol, similar to Charlie Pace.

Funnier still, when I called these numbers using my in-game phone, there was more. Anne-Lucie's number revealed a Morse code message that decodes to something along the lines of "Some of us are trying to sleep here." Can't you see Ana saying that? :) But the best part was calling Pace's number: you hear guitar
music on the other end of the line.

'Lost' winning Sunday night ratings battle

US import Lost is winning the ratings battle with BBC Three's Being Human on Sunday nights, according to the latest figures.

Both shows were roughly even when they began on January 25, with Lost registering 974k (4.6%) and Being Human picking up 898k (3.9%).

Last night Lost - now in its penultimate season - averaged 936k (4%) in the 9pm hour. Being Human, meanwhile, has lost viewers every week to date and last night dropped to just 578k (2.5%). The figure is still up around a third on the channel average for the slot, however.

Just wanted to pass this along. I took a screencap from the latest Trailer for a videogame, “Singularity” (for 360/PS3/PC). You can clearly read the Lost Numbers (written in reverse order). Not sure why there is another number at the end? It looks like either 11 or 14. Maybe they had to alter it a bit to prevent copyright issues? Anyway, here it is:

Marc-Andre Grondin, Ellen Barkin and Famke Janssen are starring in The Chameleon, a psychological thriller being directed by Jean Paul Salome.

The script, written by Salome and Natalie Carter, revolves around the reunion of a young man (Grondin) and his family after being positively identified in an unsolved missing-persons case. The reunion turns bittersweet when suspicions arise about whether he really is their son.

Barkin will play the mom, and Janssen is an FBI agent. Nick Stahl and Emilie de Ravin also star.

The project was inspired by a real person profiled in an August article in The New Yorker titled "The Chameleon: The Many Lives of Frederic Bourdin." Bourdin assumed at least 39 identities, three of them missing teens

Thanks to Matthew for the heads up.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The Fox network is shaking up Wednesday night by swapping reality hit "American Idol" and the new police procedural "Lie to Me."

Once the singing competition moves into the finals March 11, Fox will pivot "Idol" to 9 p.m., turning its ratings Death Star against ABC's "Lost" for the rest of season.

The Tim Roth-starring "Lie to Me" will stay out of the way by shifting to 8 p.m.

Though "Idol" and "Lost" tend to have different audiences, last week Fox aired a two-hour "Idol" that stretched into the 9 p.m. hour and seemed to take a little steam out of the mystery thriller, whose ratings have fallen with each episode this season.

For "Lie," the move is a mixed blessing. The drama won't have nearly as much competition at 8 p.m. Wednesday, but it won't have "Idol" for a lead-in either.

This is the first time in two years that "Lost" has faced "Idol."

    New William Mapother (Ethan) Interview
    View Comments
    Labels: , ,
    Bookmark and Share

    Hey All,
Our good friends over at Lostzilla.net had an opportunity to interview LOST actor William Mapother who plays the mysterious Other Man Ethan Rom.

After his appearance in season 1 as a spy for the others, Ethan has continued to make appearances throughout the seasons.

Mapother talks about LOST and much more...

    Enjoy!!

How did you like going back to Lost? When did they tell you that you'd be back?

A: I loved going back. Seeing the cast and crew is like going to a reunion -- a lot of hugs and Hello’s. They asked me last August to shoot the episode, but I was doing a stage play, so they shot my scene in October, after the play ended. They were very accommodating to Mr. Ethan.

The castmember you're more fond of? Who do you enjoy working with the most?

A: I like them all. The producers gathered a terrific group of actors, and they’re all very professional and easy to work with. I probably know Matthew Fox the best, because we’ve worked together the most, but I like everyone.

If you could play any other character on the show, which one would it be?

A: Good question. Probably Jack if I felt like being the hero, Locke if I felt like being the prophet, and Ben if I felt like being mysterious!

How did your life change after Lost? Do you get different job offers now? How does one life's change after shooting in Hawaii? What do you do there when you're not shooting?

A: I get recognized more often now, of course. I was hiking in the northern Czech Republic in the woods, and someone complimented me on ‘Lost’ (!). Fortunately, almost all ‘Lost’ fans are very polite and complimentary, so I don’t mind at all. I don’t know that my job offers are different, but I think I get more of them, because so many people in the entertainment industry watch the show. Shooting in Hawaii changes one’s life this way: You now envy those who live there. : ) The show flies me over just to shoot my scenes, so I don’t have a lot of free time, but if I do, I hike or go to the beach or rent a car to see the island’s beauty.

Do you have any theories about the show? Did you watch it before you were a part of it? Your favourite season and episode? Do you watch the show when you're not on it?

A: I have no theories. I’m definitely in the back seat, trusting that the drivers know where they’re going (!). I was offered the part on the morning the show premiered, so I accepted without having seen it. The next morning, when I flew to Hawaii to shoot, the show was already a hit. My favorite season (so far) was probably the first, because that’s when I was on it the most. : ) Yes, I never miss an episode.

What do you think about the fact that your character is appearing more often on Lost now that he's dead?

A: I think the actor who plays him is very fortunate. : ) I think the producers like him or they wouldn’t keep bringing him back, of course. And I have a lot of people ask questions about Ethan -- his history, etc. I think a lot of fan still find him very interesting.

Your character shot Locke... do you think this will have repercussions?

A: My best answer: Only if the writers want it to. With all the time travel going on, they can do almost anything they want. So if it is convenient to them for Locke’s leg to be hurting, then yes, it will have consequences.

Do they tell you stuff about Ethan's background, or you just go with the flow?

A: I asked when I first started shooting, and they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) tell me much. I think they were still figuring things out. Most of it I’ve made up for myself, just to make the character real to me. Of course, I get surprises every now and then. For instance, I was surprised to learn Ethan was a surgeon. I suppose I completely forgot I had gone to medical school!

When Ethan was killed off, did you know you were going to be back? Actually, do you know right now if you'll be back this season? How does it feel to have more screentime after your character's death?

A: I did not know I’d be back, but I suspected. But of course back then, so many characters had not yet returned to the show. But if I remember correctly, I think someone hinted to me that I’d be back. I don’t know if I’ll be back. They call me when they need me. I went to catholic schools for sixteen years, so it feels great to be resurrected again and again!

Do you like being a recurring actor, or you'd rather be a regular one?

A: Either is good. Regular actors make a lot more money and get to live in Hawaii, but as a recurring actor, I’m in LA closer to friends and family, and I have been able to play many characters that I could not have. So I would be fortunate either way.

Man of science or man of faith? Jack or Locke?

A: I don’t understand the question. Am I? I’m a man of both, like most people, I think. I believe in science, but there’s so much we still don’t and can’t understand, like how the universe even came about, that of course some faith is required. I’m probably more like Locke than Jack.

Lost has created a whole new way of enjoying TV shows. What do you think about that, about thousands of people downloading the show because they can't wait to see the episode on TV moths later, and about the interactive official websites?

A: I think it’s terrific. It has helped lead the way to the audience getting to see the show however, whenever they want, and as an audience member, I’m the same way. I want it now! Of course, I do have the same concern that many in Hollywood do: If people download content (TV, music, etc) for free off the internet, how do the creators get paid? That question is dominating Hollywood right now.

Be honest: do you understand a single thing about the time travel stuff this season? Because we're confused as hell!

A: I understand some of it, but some of it will definitely require additional viewings. : ) I suspect that the producers might be doing that intentionally, in other words, compressing information to make viewers want to return to it, in order to give the show a longer life than most TV shows.

Hey Andy, ran across this recent interview. The interviewer is knowledgeable about the show and asks some good questions about Ben's character and Emerson's portrayal. We've heard a lot of this before, but there are some fresh insights in there.

    Hey All,
The LOST cast and crew celebrated the 100th episode on set with a special LOST Island Cake, made by the experts at Ace of Cakes a bakery, which has it's own show on Food Network and is known for their custom cake designs.

During our interview with LOST star Jorge Garcia, he mentioned the cake to us, but asked us not to say anything because it was a surprise. He also informed us that Ace of Cakes might be featuring the cake on their season finale show.

So once we get clips we will post them for you all.

The cake looks pretty sweet, so here are a few images that Garcia has posted on his blog and the link to find even more:

    Grant Bowler Interview

Thanks to thedemonhog for the heads up.

The name Grant Bowler may not immediately ring a bell with American audiences, but if he keeps doing what he's been doing the last few years, that will change fast. We first saw the Australian actor in his role as Captain Gault on 'Lost' (he was the head cheese of the freighter before being relieved of command by Keamy the mercenary), and his current role on 'Ugly Betty' as Connor Owens is definitely making a splash at the ABC hit.

Back in Oceania (he was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia), he's famous for his role on the wildly popular 'Outrageous Fortune' and as the former host of 'The Mole', among other things. We chatted with Grant about the shake-up he's caused on 'Ugly Betty', his 'Lost' days, and what's in store for him in the future.

TV.com: Is there any chance you'll be back on 'Lost' again?

Grant Bowler: Look, I hope so. I'd love to go back on the series. I had an absolute ball on 'Lost'. Again, a very successful show, tremendous show. So I'd love to go back on. I don't know, if they call me, I'll be there about twenty seconds after they call. But the thing with 'Lost' is that you have no idea until 10 minutes after you were meant to be there, what's happening. I don't know anybody on the show who's not in the dark. So your guess is as good as mine. But if J.J. can hear me, really, I'm up, I'll go again.

TV.com: Actually, I just spoke to Damon and Carlton earlier this morning. I didn't get a chance to ask about you, I should have. I should have lobbied for you to come back.

Grant Bowler: Yeah, thanks, mate. Next time you get a chance, do, because I would love to. But yeah, no, your guess is as good as mine.

TV.com: All your scenes were on the freighter.

Grant Bowler: We were on a freighter and it was great. When we were shooting the final episodes, the last couple of nights we were out doing the stuff on the freighter, the seas got quite big. And we actually couldn't get off the freighter on my last night. We had to take the freighter--we couldn't get off the freighter onto the transport boat. So we had to take the freighter all the way back in. And I remember that as being one of the longest days I've ever had in my life, because the freighter took hours to get back in.

TV.com: Did you know how long your stay would be on 'Lost'? Or did you just pick up a script and see that Keamy was going to shoot you?

Grant Bowler: I picked up the script and saw that Keamy was going to shoot me. Yeah, that was as much of a surprise to me as it was to anybody else. In fact, I was really enjoying the episode up until then. And that was hilarious, because I was sitting in the living room with my wife, and I went, "Ugh!" And she went, "What?" And I went, "I'm dead!" She went, "Oh, that's not good." And I said, "No, it's not!"

    TV Guide's Top Sawyer Nicknames

Thanks to thedemonhog for the heads up.

Lost is back, and with it an exciting new season of Sawyer nicknames. The former con man kicked things off right, dropping a few gems in the first two hours of the season: "Dr. Wizard" for Faraday, "Ginger" for Charlotte, "Frogurt" for Neil and even "The Ghost of Christmas Future" for himself. As we eagerly await Ol' Scruffy's next instant classic, here's a look our favorites to date.

    11. "Freckles"
    For: Kate
Explanation: This one gets a nod simply because of the sheer volume of its usage. Plus, this pet name is endearing, which we can't say for most of the others.
    Honorable Mentions: "Sassafrass," "Shortcake"

    10. "Genghis"
    For: Miles Straume
Explanation: Sawyer doesn't shy away from the easy references, and ethnicity is usually his first line of attack. Case in point: this reference to Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan. Sawyer's also referred to Miles as "Bruce Lee from the Freighter" and "Donger," a play off of Sixteen Candles' Long Duk Dong.

    9. "Kenny Rogers"
For: Frank Lapidus, the Freighter Folk's chopper pilot
Explanation: A simple look-alike gag, but it had us rolling.
    Honorable Mention: Shaggy

    8. "Jackass"
    For: Jack
Explanation: Get it? His name is Jack, and Sawyer's calling him an ass. The clever devil.
Honorable Mentions: "Cool Hand", "Dr. Do-Right," "Dr. Giggles," "Amarillo Slim"

    7. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
    For: Jin and Sun Kwon
Explanation: While again ethnically based, this nickname is also indicative of Sawyer's extensive knowledge of high and low culture. He frequently references Star Wars and classic literature. In this case, we think he was just hoping for subtitles to Jin and Sun's conversation.
Honorable Mentions: "Papa-San" (Jin); "Tokyo Rose" (Sun)

    6. "Rambina"
    For: Ana Lucia
Explanation: Tough as nails, she was one of the few women on the island to match Sawyer's surliness. Her fearless, cavalier approach earned her the name.
Honorable Mentions: "Hot Lips," "Ana LuLu," "Cupcake"

    5. "Skeletor"
    For: Roger Linus's skeleton
Explanation: Okay, totally obvious. But Sawyer was drunk. On who-knows-how-old Dharma Initiative beer. Still, funny.

    4. "Mr. Clean"
    For: Locke
Explanation: We're big fans of this one, and wouldn't you know it, executive producer Damon Lindelof says it's his overall favorite. "It felt particularly witty, considering Sawyer had used up most of his 'bald' jokes at that point," Lindelof said. "He proved ever-resourceful."
Honorable Mentions: "Cue Ball," "Brutus," "Colonel Kurtz"

    3. "Captain Bunny Killer"
    For: Ben
Explanation: One of Sawyer's most literal nicknames: Only days earlier, Ben had "killed" a rabbit to scare Sawyer into submission.
Honorable Mentions: "Yoda," "Gizmo," "Bug-eyed Bastard"

    2. "Stay Puft"
    For: Hurley
Explanation: Hugo has been on the receiving end of Sawyer's quick wit more than any other survivor, and once revoked Sawyer's nicknaming privileges by beating him at ping pong. Unfortunately for Hurley, Sawyer falls back on physical appearances even more often than ethnicity.
Honorable Mentions: "Three Men and a Baby" (with Charlie and Aaron, counting Hurley twice), "Deep Dish," "Jabba," "Snuffy," "Jumbotron," "International House of Pancakes"

    1. "Captain Falafel"
    For: Sayid
Explanation: Just as Hurley is the main recipient of fat jokes, Sayid gets the most racist comments. The once-and-future assassin did torture Sawyer only a few days after they met, but still, not cool. Of course, Sayid seems to take a sticks-and-stones attitude to the whole thing.
Honorable Mentions: "Red Beret," "Al Jazeera," "Captain A-rab"

Kim Dickens to star on Treme

Thanks to GregDean for the heads up.

Steve Zahn is in negotiations and Kim Dickens is set to co-star on "Treme," David Simon's pilot for HBO.

"Treme," which takes its title from an area in New Orleans, is a post-Katrina-themed drama that chronicles the rebuilding of the city through the eyes of local musicians.

Zahn would play a whip-smart street dancer, local radio DJ, band member and proud New Orleans native with anger issues. The role would showcase Zahn's musical talents as a singer-guitarist.

Dickens would play a hardworking chef who opened her own restaurant and has an on-again/off-again relationship with Zahn's character.

Zahn and Dickens join previously cast Clarke Peters, Wendell Pierce and Khandi Alexander.

"Treme" marks the first major series commitment for Zahn, who has been heavily pursued by the networks for several years.

Zahn, who recently made a rare guest appearance on "Monk," next will be seen in the thriller "A Perfect Getaway." He is repped by Endeavor and Principal Entertainment.

Gersh-repped Dickens has strong ties with HBO, where she co-starred on the series "Deadwood" as well as "12 Miles of Bad Road" and "1%." She recently recurred on "Friday Night Lights."

Simon created "Treme" with Eric Overmyer.

One of the benefits of Lost's time-skipping is that viewers get to learn about the island's past, and visit interesting historical characters along the way. Last week, we saw former Other Charles Widmore and a nuclear weapon dubbed "Jughead". In this week's episode, "The Little Prince"—named after the book by French pilot and many-time plane crash survivor Antoine de Saint-Exupery (check out EW's take on the possible meanings behind the title)—we met a freshly shipwrecked crew, which included a young (and pregnant) Danielle Rousseau. But back on the mainland, and three years in the future, Sayid dodges yet another attack by tranquilizer gun. Would that work in real life?

I don't even know what you guys would classify this as or even at all, but I ran across a trailer for a low budget international movie called Dark Island. I just think it's a blatant rip off of some of the ideas from our beloved series. Not sure if you can post anything about this, but I just thought you'd be interested anyway.

Is the war on online piracy Lost?

My favourite castaways are already back on US television, but Network Seven seems to have abandoned its plan of "fast-tracking" Lost.

The enigmatic Lost returned to US screens almost two weeks ago, yet in Australia the Seven Network is still spruiking it as "returning in February". So much for last season's efforts to screen each episode of Lost in Australia within a few days of it airing in the US.

Fast-tracking was clearly an attempt to win back viewers who illegally download DVD-quality episodes of Lost from the internet each week. Ironically, many of these people were probably driven to piracy after they missed an episode of their favourite show because the networks constantly screw around with their schedules.

The apparent failure of fast-tracking would support my theory that people don't download shows like Lost because they want to see it before it screens in Australia, they download them because they're sick of the contempt the networks show for their viewers.

Anyone with internet access can already download the first three episodes of the new series of Lost using BitTorrent. If you combine the uTorrent software with FeedMyTorrents.com, you can even set your computer to automatically download new episodes as they screen in the US. You don't need to be a nerd to figure this stuff out any more. The fact you can easily bypass any restrictions put in place by your Internet Service Provider makes a mockery of Senator Conroy's plans to filter out file-sharing.

The television piracy debate becomes more interesting this year because Australians finally have a legitimate alternative in the form of Apple's Australian iTunes Store. The iTunes Store starting selling television shows in June last year, conveniently waiting until just after all the big US series wound up for the year. Apple Australia has repeatedly assured me that shows such as Lost will be available for download within 24 hours of screening locally.

The ability to download Lost the day after it screens will be a big test for those BitTorrent users who claim they would happily pay for downloads if there was a legit alternative. Lost will sell for $2.99 an episode, although there might be the cheaper option of a Season Pass. You can bet the industry will be watching closely to see if viewers stick with the networks, embrace the iTunes model or continue to flock to BitTorrent.

The Oceanic Six may be about to find peace, but things certainly look grim for the television networks if they can't make peace with viewers.

Thanks to Dee for the heads up.

She is the luminous and often tough-talking star of the hit TV series Lost which just returned for its next season. Lily also completed a movie, Afterwards, a film about love and death, that premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.

In this exclusive interview with Paul Fischer, the beautiful ex-air hostess talks about the film as well as the impact Lost has had on her life and career.

Question: I remember talking to John Malkovich, who said that doing a film like Afterwards made him think more about one’s mortality the older you get. You’re obviously a lot younger than he is, but does doing a film like that give you any cause to pause about such weighty issues?

Lilly: You know, I think I have spent so much of my life contemplating mortality.

    Question: Why?

Lilly: Well, I was brought up in the church. I was never 100 percent convinced that what I was being told had to be the absolute truth. I believed that you had to work that out for yourself, so within the context that I was being raised, I was constantly questioning, and wondering, and asking, and searching my own soul. I had a very innate nature towards the spiritual, and the soul. I don’t know why. I don’t know where that comes from. But it’s always been there, and it’s still there. And I’m only 29. But 29 years of searching and wondering. And you eventually come to the place. It doesn’t matter what happened yesterday, it doesn’t matter what’s going to happen tomorrow. What matters is what you and I are doing right now. And are we happy? And are we having a good time? And if we are, then sod the rest. [LAUGHTER]
