LOST Blogger and Podcaster Karen Mentioned in Star Bulletin

    Hey All,
Of course for some reason if you do not know by now, ABC held a special LOST Season 6 Premiere Red Carpet party on the beach in Hawaii yesterday. The event was called Sunset on the Beach and several fans from ALL across the world including fellow bloggers, friends and podcast partner Karen made the trip!

Well Karen gave me a call about an hour ago to let me know that she is having a great time and wanted to say hi to all of you out there. She also mentioned that she made the local Hawaii Paper the Star Bulletin and I just looked it up.

Here is the portion where Karen is mentioned:

As fans screamed to Michael Emerson, "We know you're a good guy! You're amazing!" he, too, acknowledged them from the red carpet, generating a new rush of noise. "They're amped up!" said the actor who plays Ben Linus.

At an event that both greeted the sixth and final season of "Lost" and bid farewell to the ensemble cast that will never walk a red carpet over Waikiki sand again, fans appeared in droves to express their appreciation, catch a glimpse of their favorite stars and watch the first hour of a two-hour season premiere scheduled to air Tuesday night on ABC.

An estimated 15,000 people, sometimes five deep with hands extended into the air clutching phones, cameras and other recording devices, gathered around the metal barriers at last night's Sunset on the Beach "Lost" premiere. It was such an impressive showing that even creator and executive producer/writer Carlton Cuse paused on the red carpet to take photos of the wildly enthusiastic fans with his own camera.

Karen Mauro and her husband Cris, wearing a Dharma Initiative T-shirt, flew in from Florida for the premiere. Karen "explores potential clues ... and hopefully gives people another way of looking at things" in her "Lost" blog that she said has thousands of followers. The Hawaii event gave her the opportunity to finally meet some of the people with whom she's been communicating online for five years.

Donna Moyle won ABC's sweepstakes competition and traveled from Portland, where she stood near the red carpet wearing a pink WWLD (What Would Locke Do?) T-shirt. Introduced to the series in March, she's since watched every episode on DVD.

It was clear that the event was meaningful to the stars, as well.

Matthew Fox is thrilled Lost is over

Thanks to sharon for the heads up.

In a smart London hotel, Matthew Fox, the star of Lost, has a killer hangover after a night out in Soho. 'I'm feeling kinda rough,' he drawls. 'I didn't mean for this to happen but I went out, there was drink, more drink - then even more. It was unexpected.'

Fox, 43, plays Jack Shephard, leader of a group of crash survivors in the show whose final series begins here on Friday. The part was originally written for Batman star Michael Keaton, and Shephard was supposed to be killed off after the first episode.
Fox shrugs: 'It's all part of the Lost myth. Strange things happen off screen as well as on. One of the most exciting things about the show for me was that I never knew whether I was going to get killed off. None of us did. Some actors hated it; I loved the idea of never knowing what was going to happen next. Most of us weren't even told the real ending. It's important to keep everyone guessing.'
Married to a former model, Margherita Ronchi, with two children, Kyle, 11, and Byron, eight, Fox is currently working on a new superhero movie called Billy Smoke, which is out next year.

My life could have been a complete disaster.
I was a pretty wild kid. I grew up on a ranch in the middle of nowhere under the huge blue skies of Wyoming. I had two brothers and a lot of friends and a lot of freedom. Out West, kids grow up with very few rules. You find strange ways to entertain yourselves. There is a whole culture in the West about what you should do to define yourself as a man, a strong man - I started experimenting with drink when I was about 13, and I was driving a year later with a farm licence. It's a very macho environment.

By the time I was 16 ten of my close friends had died.
Some were suicides, some were accidents, some were just recklessness. There's a flip side to having so much space and freedom in that you get this sense that there are very few options beyond those huge horizons. I had friends who started to feel trapped by life there, and friends who were just crazy. Most of the deaths were caused by accidents. You'd go into town and get smashed on drink and then drive 60 miles home down a deserted road in the pitch dark at 2am. That was a common thing to do.

    My dad saved my life.
He pulled me out of Wyoming when I was 16 and sent me to a boarding school in Massachusetts called Deerfield. I think he could see I was heading in the wrong direction in life. I hated Deerfield when I arrived. I was a cowboy out from the middle of the Wild West plonked into this school where the boys all wore suits and ties and studied. It was like Dead Poets Society to me. I didn't conform at all. There were bed checks, curfews, sit-down meals and no girls. I was this absolute rebel who smoked and drank and put my boots on the desk. I hated it but looking back it was the best thing that could have happened to me.

I wouldn't trade my upbringing for anything.
It was wild, it was reckless but it was free. There's something compelling about living life like that, but you have to get the right perspective on it. My background is a huge part of who I am. I'm more comfortable on the back of a horse driving cattle than I am on a red carpet. Even now when I need to recharge myself I have to go back there.

I tried to make it as a trader on Wall Street.
After Deerfield, I went to Columbia University and I wanted to make a success of myself. Back then being a Wall Street trader was the definition of success. I got an interview. I am 6ft 2in and I had no suit, so I borrowed one from a friend who happened to be five nine. I turned up looking odd and I saw everyone checking out my dusty old desert boots. I heard one guy screaming like Gordon Gekko and I just knew I couldn't hack it.

I was terrified of acting when I started and I still am.
It is what drives and challenges me. Fear. I signed up to classes at William Macy's Theatre School in New York. Initially I'd get so nervous I'd feel physically sick. Everything was terrifying, from standing up in front of people to revealing emotions. It was so against everything I'd grown up to be. Out in the West, it's wild, men are men, emotions aren't exposed and you don't talk about feelings. Every day I'd find myself full of fear but every day I'd find myself compelled to go on.

I use speed to relax myself.
I love speed and I am definitely an adrenaline junkie. The success of Lost has been amazing for this addiction because now I have great motorbikes, great hot rod cars and I have just got my pilot's licence. I'll take delivery of a single-engine Bonanza D36 plane soon. Flying has become my greatest love. Being up in the air, miles away from anyone and anything, makes you feel unbelievably free.

I want a new life - I am thrilled Lost is finally over.
I've spent five years as Dr Jack Shephard. It's been a crazy experience but I want more. I want to do films, I want to do theatre, I want to be different people. It's made my name and made me famous all over the world. I've won awards for it and it's possibly the best TV series that has ever been made, but nothing beats leaping back into the unknown. Filming the very last show was a mix of sadness and pure exhilaration for me.

Women find any man on the TV sexy.
You can't take it seriously. If a guy goes on television then there are women out there who will find them attractive. I don't buy into the sex-symbol thing. It's a compliment but that's it. I'm not interested. I'm a married man. I married a girl who worked to support me while I was trying to make it as an actor. She knows exactly who I am. We've been together more than 20 years, she's the mother of my kids and that's what it's about.

I have skinny-dipping parties just to make people take off their clothes.
On the set of Lost I instigated a few skinny-dipping parties but I can't say who came. It's important if you're having a party that you do something outrageous and I'm not afraid to lead by example. I like everyone to get their clothes off and jump in the water. It's a great way to get people excited.

I drink and smoke to excess at times.
I can't help it. It's part of who I am. The wildness never quite goes. What I've discovered is to have periods of drinking and smoking, then periods of total abstinence. I wish I could stop smoking. I'd like to give up but I'm an addict.
People call me the next George Clooney but I'm more Marlboro Man.
I would love his career but I think I'm rougher round the edges. Even though I'm in one of the biggest series on the planet, I can move around undisturbed. I can fly under the radar.

Shaving off all my hair was very liberating.
It was my last day on Party Of Five (a series he starred in before Lost) and I got rid of it all. Some people didn't like it but I loved it. Every guy should do it once.

The hardest part of leaving Lost is leaving Hawaii.
We moved to Hawaii when I got the job on Lost. Byron was aged two when he arrived so he grew up there. It's an amazing place with unbelievable people, blue sea, great weather. I was sadder to leave Hawaii than Lost.

    Brazilian Interview with Cast

Thanks to Julia for the following and for translating this for all DarkUFO readers.

Hey Andy. I found this interview from a brazilian magazine called "Época". I translate some parts if you want to post to your blog.

    Terry O’Quinn
Are you happy with the destiny of your character?
Terry: Well, it was a big journey to John Locke. And apparently it’s over (laughs). If I were a common spectator, I would say that John Locke died and think "what disappointment to him." I see him as a tragic character, it’s hard to like him. He thought he had the chance to be someone, respected, loved, have changed something. In the end looks like he didn’t get it. Whoever is there is no more Locke.

How do you do to play a character without knowing exactly who you are?
Terry: I don’t worry too much. I just read the script and imagine what that character wants to do. I didn’t know I wasn’t John Locke anymore in the fifth season. In the first or second episode I warned I would play Locke as he always had been, but indestructible, more confident and daring. Apparently, he is now a more dangerous person. I walk like him, talk like him, but I'm not exactly the same. He is more evil (laughs). He has other things in mind.

Do you have a personal theory? Do you have any idea how will be the end?
Terry: I don’t. For me it makes no difference, as an actor. I don’t know how it ends, but I think for the fans it will be satisfactory. We are going to close the book. I trust the producers. They have a lot to explain to the fans, and they have done a good job in the last five years.

    Josh Holloway:
Is there a rivalry between you and Matthew Fox, like in the show?
Josh: Not at all. We are very friends. We both have a family, we get along. Artistically it is a blessing to work with Matthew, our chemistry is good.

What is your reaction when you pick up the script for a new episode and see that you will have another scene without a shirt?
Josh: Oh, I shoot the script on the wall, hide all the cookies in the house and I holed up in the gym (laughs). Seriously, is not easy to keep this kind of appearance at the 40. IT’s very different from when you're 25. Now it takes longer to get in shape, I have to eat less and move more. But this is good, makes me want to stay healthy.

How do you see the love triangle between Sawyer, Jack and Kate?
Josh: The authors were very smart to develop this in a natural, organic way, and I think that really happen in real life. We are on an island, there’s a hot girl and two guys. It is normal to think "who gets the girl?" (Laughs). We are human, we have some basic needs.

What would be the ideal end for you?
Josh: Tha the survivors had a second chance. The island makes you face your demons and learn. It's grow or die. I wish they had the chance to live happily ever after. But who knows? Sawyer probably will die trying to save a frog or something (laughs).

    Michael Emerson:
How difficult is it to live a character ambiguous as Ben?
Emerson: I Love it. Precisely this ambiguity is what fascinates and irritates the people at the same time. The authors were very smart to keep it for so long, people don’t know what is happening. Also, I’m not very manipulative in real life. I’m a terrible liar. It's nice to play someone who gets along with these things.

Do you think the end of Lost will leave many mysteries without being revealed?
Emerson: I trust the authors and I think the end will be satisfactory for the fans. However, there are many things in the show that doesn’t have answers yet and I don’t think they have time to explain everything. I thought soon as we started to film the sixth season, I would figure out some things about the end, but we are filming the 10th episode and things are more obscure than last season. The ideal end would be a way to make people return to watch the six seasons, with a new perspective.

What is the mystery that makes you more curious?
Emerson: The black smoke! There was a point where I thought I had discovered what it was. I even had a scientific explanation! But after what happened in season five, I saw I was wrong. I think it's more supernatural than scientific.

    Evangeline Lilly
Do you want your character to end up with Sawyer or Jack?
Lilly: Kate's life has become so complex with time that both Sawyer and Jack were in the background. I was grateful to the writers for having done that, gave more weight to the character. In season three, when Kate was jumping from one to another, I found that the integrity and the redemption of the character was harmed. If I was a viewer, I would not like Kate. I think it's great that Kate is focused on issues such as dignity, self respect, things more important than a passion for one of the guys on the island.

    Henry Ian Cusick
Are you curious to know the end?
Henry: Yes. We have filmed 10 episodes and I still have no idea what’s the end. I didn’t even find out what is this island. I Just don’t think this will be the "happily ever after" kind of ending.

I thought I'd give you a heads-up on a very cool Lost-inspired print I found online from an artist who's also a fan of the show. Maybe your readers would be interested.

I picked up the white paper version, but there is one on black paper too. It's called Don't Let Them Touch and is by Armando Chainsawhands (I previously bought one of his other non-Lost-related prints). I've attached a pic, they're only $20 each in a signed/numbered run of 50 and 25 I think. You can find them at www.armandochainsawhands.com under the Portfolio section.

    The sun sets on 'Lost'

Thanks to tody for the heads up.

The last couple of seasons of "Lost" began with a whimper, slowed by the writers strike that temporarily crippled the television industry into early 2008 and a faltering economy that precluded any notion of gala parties and premieres in 2009.

This year, however, the series returns to its former glory as it prepares for the final exit -- and once again, Hawaii residents will reap the benefits.

Tomorrow night the first episode of the sixth and final season will screen at Sunset on the Beach, three days ahead of the rest of the world (229 countries and 49 states, to be precise), which must wait until Tuesday. The hype sparked "Lost" vacation packages, attracting fans from all over the world to attend the event unique to Hawaii. It could be even more popular than the Season 3 premiere event in October 2006, when throngs of screaming fans paralyzed Waikiki.

Most dedicated viewers will stake their territory at Queen's Beach long before the stars and producers walk the international press line. (Consider this: For what other show do the writers and producers stroll the red carpet? Dedicated followers and ingenious plot twists have made Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof celebrities, too!)
Daniel Dae Kim, who has played Jin Kwon in more than 100 episodes since the series premiere, said the writers have always created innovative methods to convey plot, action and character development, and this season will be no different.

"There are going to be changes to the narrative storytelling style," he said in a telephone interview. "We're going back to being character-based in a way that reminds me of Season 1."

Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee Michael Emerson has hinted about the upcoming season's violence and energy, and Kim agreed.

"Every season, our show seems to have gotten a little bigger in scale," he said. But Kim believes the final season will combine the best of both character development and action.

Along the way, some viewers drifted because of the convoluted science-fiction plot, while other fans became even more devoted, forming the show's "smaller but more vocal and hard-core audience." Kim is hopeful the final season will lure both groups.

"At its core I think 'Lost' is a human story," he said. "The characters pique a lot of interest."

And the actors who play them are just as enthralled. Will Jin and Sun reunite happily? At all? Even Kim doesn't know.

In a moment of reflection, Kim pondered the evolution of the show. For him the biggest change occurred between Seasons 1 and 2. Initially, few people thought the series would succeed; nobody really knew the names of the actors involved. The next year, all were a worldwide phenomenon.

"The second-season Sunset on the Beach (premiere) kind of overwhelmed me a bit," he admitted.

But all that fuss certainly has helped the actors' careers. According to Kim, he never would have received the offer to perform the lead in a theater production of "The King and I" in London last summer without the recognition "Lost" has brought him.

He's also proud to have participated in a series that will leave an indelible mark on the television landscape. When discussing the past 10 years of television history, he said, "You can't have that conversation without including 'Lost.'"

But for him there's been much more to the experience.

"Living in Hawaii has been one of the best things about being on this show."

    In case you missed it
To prepare for the first episode after the complex Season 5 finale, it's best to watch both installments of "The Incident" again on www.abc.com. There's also a multipage episode summary available on the site.

    A few key points:

» We finally meet Jacob, the multilingual leader of the island who permeates many of the characters' lives long before they crash on the island. He crosses paths with Sawyer and Kate as youngsters, as well as Jack as a surgeon. Does he save Locke's life after Locke is thrown from a window? And there he is, attending Jin and Sun's wedding in Korea. In a cab he urges Hurley to return to the island. Jacob appears to be partially responsible for Nadia's death by pulling Sayid aside just before Nadia gets run over by a car. In most instances, Jacob touches fingers with the key characters at some point. And he's obviously behind the miracle that prevents Richard Alpert from aging.

» Locke wants Jacob dead and tells Ben to stab him. Ben agrees because he is fearful of his dead daughter's threat to destroy him if he doesn't follow Locke's orders (and he also resents Jacob for ignoring him for so many years).

» But if Locke's body is still in the coffin on the beach, who is with Ben and Jacob in the tomb underneath the statue? Who, exactly, has found the "loophole"?

» Back in the 1970s in Dharma Initiative time, Jack is trying to blow up the island (for Kate, he explains to Sawyer) in an effort to prevent the crash of Flight 815 and everything that subsequently happens on the island. At the Swan station construction site, Jack throws the plutonium core into the pit. Everything metal gets pulled in, including Juliet, who is tangled in chains. The fall critically injures her. When she sees the explosive beside her, she whacks the core until it detonates. The show ends in a blinding flash of white light.

Who's alive? Who's dead? How will it change the next 30 years, if at all?

    'Lost' Showrunners Pick DVDs

Thanks to Bongzilla for the heads up.

Our occasional DVD-recommendations series returns with picks from a pair of Hollywood insiders, and the minds behind one of the most popular dramas on television. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are what's called "showrunners," and the show they run is called Lost. Its final season premieres next week.

The men joined NPR's Steve Inskeep for a half-hour conversation about their favorite DVDs, and what emerged is that their tastes run from country-music biopics to rock 'n' roll mockumentaries to twisty, surreal sci-fi stories. (Go figure.)

    But they don't always agree.

"In fact we don't make eye contact with each other," Lindelof jokes. "And we only address each other directly when we're being interviewed."

When they really do differ, Cuse says, their disagreements sometimes become plot points.

"Particularly there's a latent Yankees-Red Sox rivalry that's sort of embedded in the show," Cuse says. "That has a lot to do with our individual rooting interests.

You know, pop-culture referencing television show Lost isn't the only form of entertainment that includes island fun.

With the final season of the show kicking off next week, Nintendo wants to remind you about that OTHER island.

With more than 4.2 million copies sold, Nintendo seems to make a lot of references to LOST's tropical... paradise while talking about the mysterious island of Wii Sports Resort which they call a "lush, tropical setting populated by an array of characters who have taken the initiative to have some fun."

    * Everyone gets along on Wuhu Island. Petty arguments and elaborate scheming are left behind in favor of fun activities, precision controls and cooperative play.
    * Wuhu Island offers a dozen fun resort-themed activities. Four of them are archery, golf, wakeboarding and basketball. The other eight are table tennis, Frisbee®, Swordplay, cycling, canoeing, Power Cruising, Air Sports and bowling.
    * Wuhu Island is always there when you need it. Time after time, whenever you go looking for it, it's always right where you left it. Better yet, you can leave and return to the island whenever you want.
    * Wuhu Island is a smoke-free zone.
    * If your plane crashes while you're playing Air Sports, you always restart from where you left off, even if you crash 15-16 times.
    * New technologies, such as the included Wii MotionPlus? accessory, might make you feel like you're living in the future.
    * The biggest twists and turns on Wuhu Island are the ones you make yourself, with the help of the Wii Remote? controller, which is available in both black and white.
    * Night or day, the basketball courts are always open. See how many 2s and 3s you can sink.

OK, now figure out all of the Lost references... and GO!

If you search the popular travel bargin site Kayak.com for a one-way non-stop ticket from Sydney to LAX on September 22nd, 2010 and you’ll get an Oceanic Airlines flight as a result.

For those of you who don’t follow the television show Lost, Oceanic Airlines is the fictional airline which crashed Oceanic Flight 815 on a mysterious island. The flight was traveling from Sydney to Los Angeles, which under mysterious circumstances, on September 22, 2004, the airliner, carrying 324 passengers, deviated from its original course and disappeared over the Pacific Ocean.

Of course, the whole thing is just a fun easter egg for Lost fans. When you try to purchase the flight, it redirects you to the Lostpedia article on Oceanic Flight 815.

Jon mentioned Lost a couple weeks ago when discussing Obama. He says something to the effect of "We're the people who made you move your state of the union address so that it wouldn't bump up Lost" It was pretty funny.

    2. Lose faith and make the sandwich anyway
    3. Realize that you were the instrument by which the ingredients chose to make a sandwich after all

There are some guys here in Spain who have started an iniciative: they want special fans and websites to appear with their names in the extras of the season six DVDs, as some kind of "thank you" to the lost community, like they did on the Lord of the Rings DVDs...

They created this facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=286101536210 About 5 days ago, and they have over 1.000 fans already, and that's only spanish fans. As a homage, they just made this video:

Hey Dark, I found something funny that was Lost-related. My school (and other schools) use a company called Data Match to do surveys on student interests and match you with people with similar interests. Here's this year's survey...look at the first question. That's right: Lost is a reality show! I wasn't sure where this would go but I thought people would find it amusing.

LOST REDUCED: FIVE SEASONS OF LOST IN TEN MINUTES

With the hotly anticipated sixth and final season of LOST launching on February 5th, Sky1 HD is proud to announce LOST REDUCED – a specially created ten minute play from the widely acclaimed Reduced Shakespeare Company.

The celebrated comedy theatre troupe have condensed all five seasons into a fast paced flight through the story of the Oceanic plane crash survivors. The world premiere is to be held in London on Thursday 28th January, performed for an intimate audience of competition winners. The production will also be filmed for internet broadcast as well as on the Sky Platform’s Anytime service.

Conceived by Brothers and Sisters Creative for Sky1 HD the proposal was warmly received by the Reduced Shakespeare Company who quickly agreed to write and perform LOST REDUCED. Austin Tichenor, co-author of Lost Reduced with Reed Martin enthused "We are all ginormous fans of Lost. We've followed every twist and turn in the labyrinthine plot since the very beginning. Being trusted to reduce the first five seasons to just ten minutes is a humongous responsibility. All the years we spent poring over Oceanic Airline flight manifests and arcane theories of time-travel will not have been in vain. We can't wait to see the final season! Damon and Carlton will explain everything!" Martin and Tichenor are managing partners of the Reduced Shakespeare Company and will perform Lost Reduced with long-time company member Matt Rippy.

Co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof and executive producer Carlton Cuse have praised the idea and granted permission for the production to go ahead.

Sophie Jones, Controller of Marketing, Sky1 HD, Sky1, 2 & 3 says: "When Brothers and Sisters brought this idea to us it immediately leapt out as far too good to pass up and we swiftly commissioned the script. We feel this offers a really unique interpretation of LOST that will delight both the dedicated fans and bring everyone right up to date in advance of the season 6 launch. We’re enormously grateful that executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse along with ABC Studios have given the project their blessing. "

Tickets will be given away to fans through a series of online competitions and radio promotions.

LOST REDUCED is written and performed by the Reduced Shakespeare Company with the project overseen by Sophie Jones and Brothers and Sisters Creative for Sky1.

The final season of LOST launches on Sky1 HD and Sky1 on Friday 5th February at 9pm.

    Hi, Dark,

I just read that Evi is having auctions to have lunch with her to help people in Rwanda. I actually read it in Spanish here http://ni.axn.com/news/evagenline-lilly-subastara-lenceria but I looked for a website in English (with more information too) to inform your visitors :) Btw, it looks like there are also auctions for products of her intimate lingerie collection to benefit children and adolescents in Brazil.
