Thanks to Sara for the heads up.
CTV.ca: I’ve read that before you appeared on the show, that you hadn’t seen much of the show, that you wanted to remain distant. When you finished your original arc, did you go back and watch the entire series?
Well, my fiancé and I, we started watching it, and then they called us, and I was like, “Okay, well now we have to stop again.” My whole thing was that Keamy, to me, was so removed from everyone on the island that I didn’t want to have any emotional kind of attachment to anyone. I kind of reverted back. So we got through the end of the second season. After my episode airs on Tuesday, we’ll dive back into our obsessive ‘Lost’ watching marathons.
CTV.ca: You have a history of appearing in musicals and are very familiar to the stage. On “Lost,” Michael Emerson (who plays “Ben Linus”) also came from a song-and-dance background… do you think there’s something about having a theatrical background that allows an actor to go really dark, in a very convincing and creative way?
Having a background in theatre is probably the strongest kind of structure you can have, it affords the actor a playground where he or she can just have the opportunity to jump in a lot of different kinds of characters that you wouldn’t necessarily have the chance to on TV. In my theatre career, before I started doing some TV, my characters just ran the gamut. It wasn’t as specific for me, because I am 6 foot 6 and 240 pounds, like I said; my first job was playing Pinocchio. So your appearance doesn’t seem to have as much weight, so there’s more room as an actor to explore. When you have that theatre background, you definitely understand your instrument so much more, I think theatre actors tend to be able, in general, go a little deeper just because of the honing of the instrument.
CTV.ca: The repeated performances allow you to zero in on the character’s complexities.
You keep finding new things every night. So when it comes to your film and television work, the obssessiveness doesn’t go to rest. Even now, I have “Robin Hood” coming out in May, and I had to go to Scotland, and I went there for two months to try and find this character and try to find his voice. I did that eight months before I started shooting the movie. I need to find some way of being able to find as many levels as I possibly can, as opposed to playing things right on the head.
CTV.ca: Are there any experiences that stand out in particular when you look back at your time on “Lost”?
“It’s actually kind of funny. I was sitting with Damon Lindelof between takes on the last episode of season four and we’re having this great conversation, then all of a sudden Damon kind of says, ‘You know, I’m pretty surprised you’re just such a nice, mellow, happy guy, that you play such a vicious, hard-core character.’ I just said, ‘Oh, well you know, I’m just a regular small town Thunder Bay boy.’ And then he looks at me and says, ‘And yet, with all this niceness and all this smiling, I feel like you might kill me at any second.’ I thought that was kind of hilarious. The whole thing to me was just a joy ride.

Funny article by Matt Webb Mitovich from Fan Cast .
An on-screen countdown clock promoting the return of ABC’s ‘V’ had ‘Lost‘ viewers madder than the Man in Black getting kicked out of a “No Smoking” section Tuesday night. ‘Lost’ boss Damon Lindelof didn’t have kind words for the constant blemish either.
The worst part of it all: The relentless reminder largely failed in its bid to recruit ‘Lost’ viewers. ‘V’ saw 30 percent of its lead-in audience decide it was “time” to go to bed or change the channel.
Coupled with the ABC logo “bug,” the ‘V’ clock claimed a conspicuous amount of screen space and even obscured key moments, such as when Jin viewed photos of his daughter for the very first time, or this pivotal scene in which Sun communicated with Jack by notepad:
Say what? “I don’t trust him“? Or “I don’t trust Vs”?
The latter is an understandable sentiment… save for the fact that ABC’s remake won’t premiere for another two years in ‘Lost’ time. As Lindelof caught the West Coast feed, he grumbled on Twitter, “Yes, people, I saw it too. 34 minutes until I cry myself to sleep.”
Twitter user @bottomrighthand offered this positive spin on the badly received bug: “I’m just glad Lost finally answered some of our questions. You know, like “When does V start?” or “How long til V, again?”
But the Nielsen ratings suggest that a large chunk of ‘Lost’ fans weren’t asking those questions or caring about the answer. Or maybe they were so peeved by the clock they chose to boycott the aliens-among-us series?

Thanks to Jeremy for the heads up.
A small moment that stood out: Richard's crazed giggle when, on the beach, Ilana asks him, "So Richard, what do we do next?"
Aw, [laughing] thanks man. It's interesting, we shot that scene last. And I can even see it on TV that I had lost some weight during the episode. I was like, "Damn, I look thin." So I do remember that moment thinking, God, you know, the character's been through some stuff in this episode, it would be nice to go the opposite way and just completely lose it. I've got to say, the work of Tucker Gates, who directed this episode, was just amazing. We went on this journey together.
Then Richard tells Jack that he's dead and in hell — pretty much the opposite of what Jacob explained to Richard.
It really is. Richard has lost so much faith in all things Jacob — and you saw some of that in the previous episode I was in, where Richard tries to commit suicide. At that point, the fact that Jacob had dangled this carrot over him for years, that there's a real purpose to everything he's doing, and yet he's not able to reveal it to him after he dies. So Richard is left with no answers himself and no purpose: an eternity of immortality and nothing to live for. I think it's really an emotional reaction to how frustrated he is that he didn't get the answers from Jacob. And then Jack presents himself as potentially a man with answers, but, at the campfire, when it's time for the next steps to be taken, no one has any clue, including Jack, where to go. Then they all point to me, at which point I just lose it.
Ricardo really did have a pretty mean priest. "You want forgiveness? Nah, sorry, you're still going to hell."
That was one tough priest. I couldn't crack that priest — nothing. And I begged. You saw me, I was on my knees ... and nothing. That was so painful. That was a painful scene to shoot and certainly to look at. I watched it [Tuesday] night and thought, Wow, that's rough, man. It was manslaughter! It wasn't murder. He failed to see the nuances of that.
There was a split second in that last scene with Richard and his dead wife that it appeared Hurley was about to channel Oda Mae Brown from Ghost and say, "You can use me, dude."
We thought about it [laughs]. That's very funny. It was great to shoot that scene with Jorge, he's amazing. It added another great color to the episode. For him to be the whisperer, the go-between, was a real treat.
Along with Richard, we learned quite a bit about Jacob, too. He wants to find someone to take over the island without getting too involved. He's kind of like Willy Wonka without the candy.
That's a really good point. Without the chocolate bars, exactly. I can't reveal too much because there will be many more answers to come. You do get a sense of what's at play between [Jacob] and the Man in Black. Again, without getting into details, there will be answers to other great questions about those two characters.
And it does appear Jacob is the good guy in this story, but that doesn't mean he's also not kind of a dick.
It's a good point. I think the writers do such a good job of layering every character, even one that seemingly is pure and good as Jacob. To recognize the villain may have an ounce of goodness in them and, vice versa, for the heroes to have flaws.

The Cost of 'Lost'? ABC Asks $900,000 for Finale

Season 6
Thanks to thedemonhog for the heads up.
Slot in Last Episode Priced Just Under That of Oscar Berth and at 400% Markup to 30-Second Spot Sold in Upfront
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- So much for "Keep it simple, stupid." ABC's "Lost" may have shed millions of viewers as the show grew increasingly complex, but the remaining fans are so intense that marketers are spending big to appear in the program's on-air farewell. The cost of a 30-second ad in the final episode of the series is coming in around a whopping $900,000, according to media buyers.
Buyers suggest ABC has been seeking between $850,000 and $950,000 for an ad berth. ABC executives declined to comment.
During last year's upfront, a 30-second spot for "Lost" was selling for an average of $213,563, according to Advertising Age's annual survey of ad costs in prime-time broadcast shows. At $900,000 a spot, ABC is clearing a markup north of 400% from advertisers who didn't reserve their time in the show last year.
The series finale of "Lost" is slated to air as part of a three-hour block on Sunday, May 23. The 8 p.m. hour of the evening will be devoted to a recap of the mysterious show and the last episode will run from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The hefty cost -- the price is just $400,000 to $600,000 less than the cost of a 30-second spot in this year's Oscars broadcast -- further illustrates the interest advertisers have in so-called event programming. With audiences increasingly watching TV programs at times of their own choosing and through nontraditional methods such as DVR playback, assembling a large crowd has become a much tougher task.
And yet, many advertisers need to reach millions of people to make their cash registers ring. With ratings for such "must-watch" events as ABC's Oscars broadcast and CBS's recent Super Bowl telecast continuing to bring in larger-than-usual audiences, marketers seem willing to pay a higher-than-normal sum to advertise, given today's fractured media landscape.
Unusual success
"There are many advertisers willing to pay a reasonable premium for inventory in programs that generate such a highly passionate and rabid fan base," said Kris Magel, exec VP-director, national broadcast at Interpublic Group of Cos.' Initiative, who could not comment on ad prices in the "Lost" finale. "There is definitely value in that."
"Lost" is unusual in its success. The six-season drama centers on a group of people seemingly marooned on an island, only to find themselves caught in the middle of a battle between forces they don't quite understand. Such complexity is often not welcomed by audiences who seek programs they can watch one week but skip the next, and any number of "Lost" knockoffs -- "The Nine," "Vanished," "Kidnapped" -- have fallen by the wayside in recent seasons. ABC also once had high hopes for this season's "Flash Forward," in which FBI agents try to solve a mysterious event, but ratings for the program have steadily declined.
Finale finances
'MASH' (1983)
A 30-second spot in the finale of the CBS show goes for about $450,000.
'SEINFELD' (1998)
Thirty-second spots go for between $1.4 MILLION and $1.8 MILLION.
'FRIENDS' (2004)
A 30-second spot costs between $1.5 MILLION and $2.3 MILLION.
'EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND' (2005)
A 30-second ad goes for about $1.3 MILLION.
'TODAY' (2006)
The cost of a 30-second ad in Katie Couric's last "Today" goes for around $110,000, more than double the normal rate.
Source: Advertising Age
Yet those viewers who hang on for the ride these programs offer are particularly devoted, and advertisers often hope to win over crowds with an unusual amount of interest in a particular show. Last week, "Lost" snared nearly 8.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen, second only to Fox's airing of "American Idol" on Tuesday evening.
The show "is different, and people talk about it, and it's not just some sitcom coming to an end," said Ira Berger, director-network broadcasting at independent agency Richards Group, who said he has no client in the program. "It's very much an event."
At $900,000, a spot on the last episode of "Lost" would cost more than any of the 10 most-expensive programs on TV for advertisers, according to Ad Age's survey of prices paid in last year's upfront. The costliest program for the 2009-2010 TV season was NBC's "Sunday Night Football," where a 30-second spot cost an average of $339,700.

5 Things To Know About Nestor Carbonell

Thanks to Natalie Simonson for the heads up.
Since his first “Lost” appearance in season 3, the time-traveling ageless wonder Richard Alpert has been a source of much intrigue and heated fan debate. Before Tuesday’s highly anticipated episode, in which the origins of the island’s most mysterious character are finally revealed, here are five things you should know about actor Nestor Carbonell, who brings the enigmatic one to life.
1. He has a long history with Matthew Fox.
Like one of “Lost’s” characters, Carbonell’s path has often intersected with that of the actor who plays Jack. “Matt and I went to the same boarding school,” says Carbonell, 42, referring to Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. “He was a year ahead of me but I certainly knew who he was.” In 2006, the two met up again when both were hired for the movie Smokin’ Aces. “I ended up killing him in that film,” remembers Carbonell with a laugh.
2. His wife is a Lostie.
He took the “Lost” gig in part because of a promise to his wife. “She’s a true fan,” says the Harvard-educated Carbonell of actress Shannon Kenny. “Even before I auditioned, she said, ‘If [you] get it, we’re all going to Hawaii.’”
Now that the actor has been bumped up from recurring status to series regular, he’s rented a house on Oahu with Kenny and their two sons, ages 7 and 4, and is eager for the entire family to master one of the island’s favorite pastimes. “We’re gonna take surfing lessons,” he says, “because it would be criminal to leave Hawaii not having given it a real shot.”
3. He does not wear guyliner.
Carbonell, who was previously a regular on “Suddenly Susan” and played Gotham City’s mayor in “The Dark Knight,” is amused by the blogosphere’s preoccupation with his eyes. But as a kid, he was so insecure about his intense gaze that “I took a pair of scissors and actually cut my eyelashes. My mom came in and was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I had such a complex about them.”
4. ‘Lost’ baffles him too.
“I equate the show to dating a really coquettish woman who teases you, gives you a little somethin’, then teases you some more,” says Carbonell with a laugh. Still, for the most part, he’s content to be left wanting more. Just don’t ask him to accept the butt-kicking Alpert took from not-Locke (Terry O’Quinn) in the February season premiere. “Terry takes me down with two little punches? Come on!” he says. “I’ll go along with the Smoke Monster and everything else, but that to me is the most implausible moment in the whole show.”
5. He’s relieved to finally have a backstory.
“It’s been an enormous challenge to play a character about whom I knew very little,” admits Carbonell, who, prior to reading the script for his Alpert-centric episode, knew only what fans did: The longtime island dweller was some sort of consigliere to the mysterious figure Jacob.

Today I came across a quite interesting video. In this PS3/Xbox360/PC game called Just Cause 2, there is an island where your plane will crash. If you fly across the island your plane will set on fire and you'll have to leave it. Once crashed there is a very interesting easter-egg to find. I have no idea if the hatch can be opened, and I have no idea if theres any other LOST-related stuff on that island. Anyways, just watch this video:

Thanks to Marren for the heads up.
With ABC's Lost now well into its riveting final season, it seemed like the perfect time for us to reveal the geek obsessions of three of the show’s stars ...
Jorge Garcia (Hugo “Hurley” Reyes): “Well, I grew up with Star Wars so that's always been my first. [Currently], I like buying Godzilla dolls. There's something about Godzilla that is endearing to me and makes me feel like a kid watching afternoon movies. I have a baby Godzilla and a couple Mecha-Godzillas and a few [other] different Godzillas—because his look changed—and one of the bad guys, Rodan. He's got a bird beak and these long, long claws. Whenever I go into a store and they have a Godzilla doll, there's a good chance I'll get it.”
Terry O’Quinn (John Locke): “All of the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian [which] Master and Commander—that movie Russell Crowe was in—was based on. There's probably 20ish books in that and I've read them all probably two times. Or even more. Sometimes I just pick up one now and read it because I know all of them so well. That's probably the only passion to that extent, but it wasn't like I was getting online and, you know, filling in people with all that I was aware of about the English Navy in the Napoleonic era.”
Michael Emerson (Ben Linus): “I spent a whole summer once when I was a kid devouring the Nancy Drew books. I think I knew more at that time about however many there were—the 25 or 30 books that existed at that time—than about anyone on Earth. [Laughs]”
GCD: We bet you didn't bring that up on a lot of first dates when you were single.
Emerson: “No. [Laughs] I sort of regret bringing it up with you.”

CTV.ca interview: 'Lost' guest star Andrea Gabriel has a girl-crush on Evangeline Lilly
by: Tyrone Warner
Date: 3/2/2010 12:17:00 PM ET
Gabriel’s Nadia has even earned the distinction of appearing in at least every season of the series (unlike most “Lost” guest stars, and several series regulars), beginning as an imprisoned suspected Iraqi insurgent, to later moving into a house of her own in Los Angeles.
And like many characters on “Lost,” even though Nadia met her own grisly death last season following Sayid’s return to LA as a member of the Oceanic Six, that doesn’t mean Gabriel won’t be appearing on future episodes of the series.
In fact, Gabriel reprises her role as Nadia in the Sayid-centric episode “Sundown,” airing Tuesday, March 2 on CTV.
Sworn to strict secrecy, Gabriel was unable to give CTV.ca any details about her appearance or clues about where the current and final season of “Lost” is heading, but did offer up her own take -- as a fan -- on this season’s reality-warping flash-sideways twist.
“I think it’s fascinating because I kind of believe in that, so I’m wondering how they are going to tie it all in,” says Gabriel.
“I believe there are alternate realities out there with subtle differences from our own, and whichever one is happening takes the least amount of energy to sustain. When the bomb went off maybe it gave an amount of energy to one reality over another in order to sustain it.”
On playing Nadia in a variety of world-spanning situations, from a dark Iraqi interrogation camp to the sunny streets of LA:
“I’m glad the Burka didn’t survive season one! It was very hot in there. I loved just being able to come back in different situations and wonder what would I do here? What would I do if I’m mugged? What if I was buying a house? In America, how good at the language would I be now? Would I know how to drive? These are the questions I was asking myself in seasons two and three. Then in season four, the whole thing behind my story was, I’m in America, and I’m comfortable here, but I’m going to be alone. Then when Sayid comes back, that adds to her joy, because I worked very hard to make it here on my own. It’s a miracle, you know? And then I die!”
On her approach making Nadia accessible:
“I always try and look at her as a woman, living under certain circumstances. How would any woman live under the type of circumstances she did. If the Republican Guard were happening in America, how would a woman respond to that? What if you’re a very intelligent, ambitious, idealistic woman, and you can’t express any of that? I don’t think Nadia was that directly involved as an insurgent, in the fighting or the bombing. She was helpful in a way a woman could be helpful.”
On working with Naveen Andrews (Sayid):
“I love working with him. Every time is just... it’s so much fun. We really do have shorthand when we fall into these characters. It goes to show you as an actor, in every job, really pay attention to the people, even if it might go nowhere... because we had such a wonderful time in season one, and he was so generous, every time I go back, it’s just easy to build off that positive initial experience.”

Thanks to ewu for the heads up.
ABC "Lost" star Ken Leung shook the hands of star-struck students who were receiving awards for their hard work at the Sui Wah Chinese Language School yesterday.
"I understand what a pain it is going to language class," said Leung who plays Miles Struame on the ABC hit show filmed in Hawai'i. "I went to language school too, but not for very long. Had I not learned Chinese, some things in life wouldn't have happened for me. I wouldn't have gotten to go to China with my grandmother or get Chinese-speaking roles."
Leung's character joined the cast in Season 4 as a spiritualist who had been born on the island years earlier. His character has the ability to extract information from dead bodies.
Yesterday, Leung played the part of a proud person of Chinese heritage at the school's Open Day, an open house for parents to come and see the work their children have been doing every Sunday at the Chinatown language school.

"LOST" in New York

ABC's signal was pulled off of Cablevision during a repeat of "Lost" Saturday night, escalating a standoff that could impact viewership of the Oscars in the tri-state area.
Some 3.3 million viewers in the New York area lost their ABC signal at midnight Saturday night.
After Cablevision and WABC-TV, ABC's owned and operated station in the nation's top TV market didn't make any progress in the their tense negotiations over retransmission consent on Saturday, ABC followed through on its threat to take the station off Cablevision's systems at 12:01 a.m. ET on March 7, the day of ABC's broadcast of the Academy Awards.
ABC's blackout came in the middle of "Lost." WABC carries "Lost" reruns from 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Saturday night, and some viewers took to Twitter when their show went dark in the middle of an episode.
Twitter was also abuzz about a major snafu on Cablevision's part. Instead of pulling only ABC, the cable operator accidentally took down all broadcast networks on its systems.
Moments after midnight, WABC and Cablevision issued another set of dueling statements pointing fingers at each other for the shutdown.
"Cablevision has once again betrayed its subscribers by losing ABC7, the most popular station in the tri-state area. This follows two years of negotiations, during which we worked diligently, up to the final moments, to reach an agreement," said WABC’s general manager Rebecca Campbell. "Cablevision pocketed almost $8 billion last year, and now customers aren't getting what they pay for ... again. It's time for Jim Dolan and the Dolan Family Dynasty to finally step up, be fair, and do what's right for our viewers."
In his statement, Charles Schueler, Cablevision's executive vp communications, said: "It is now painfully clear to millions of New York area households that Disney CEO Bob Iger will hold his own ABC viewers hostage in order to extract $40 million in new fees from Cablevision. We call on Bob Iger to immediately return ABC to Cablevision customers while we continue to work to reach a fair agreement."
At the heart of the standoff is the retransmission consent fees ABC is seeking from Cablevision for the right to carry its flagship New York station. By using the $40 million figure, Cablevision implies that ABC is looking for a fee of $1 dollar per month per subscriber, the same target that Fox had in its retransmission fight with Time Warner Cable in December.
Cablevision's counteroffer is said to be around 25 cents.

We knew that the Lost gang had some pretty strange acting jobs on the road to the island, but this 1992 clip of Michael Emerson may be the weirdest one yet.
Warming Glow managed to dig up a training video for prison guards in which Emerson portrayed an uncharacteristically nice guy, Mr. Andrews, who tries to talk down a violent inmate named Higgins.
Not quite how Benjamin Linus would have handled it, since the last time he got near anyone in a cage we recall there were some electric shocks involved.
Check it out below!
