LOST Media Mentions - DarkUFO

The 30-year-old, who plays ex-rock star Charlie Pace on the Seven Network drama series, has survived being blindfolded and hung from a tree, a dynamite explosion, and drug withdrawal.

"The make-up artist on Lost said I was easily the most abused actor on the show," Monaghan says.

"I've been beaten up, blown up, I've been a drug addict and I've been in a real mess so it was good to have that prize - the most beaten up actor on the show."

Despite all he has been through, there is plenty more in store for the young musician from Manchester. Charlie has been plagued by Desmond's precognition that he would die.

Next week Australian audiences will find out if Desmond is right, when the thrilling season three finale airs on July 26.

During a flying visit to Australia this week, Monaghan said he was relieved and happy with the conclusion. He said the two-hour double episode sees Charlie step up and prove himself for the first time.

"For a long time I felt like he was a boy and he hadn't really done anything," Monaghan said. "For him to step up and become a man was something that I was really passionate about."

After three years of playing the troubled character, Monaghan says he is often recognised on the street as Charlie, but feels he has more in common with the character he played in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbit Merry.

"Merry was more me when I was like, 11," he said. "Charlie is just quite different from me.

"He doesn't speak like I would speak, he doesn't say the things I would say, he certainly doesn't make the decisions that I would make, he hasn't lived the life that I would live."

Monaghan says he has great affection for Charlie, but admits he would have behaved differently if it had been him stranded on the island.

"He's a beautiful guy, Charlie, but he's a victim, and I've never really seen myself as a victim," he said.

"I have a lot of sentimental care over him because I think he's a guy who's trying to make things right, but I didn't really understand a lot of the decisions that he made.

"If it was me I think I'd probably be spending more time on my own, and I'd probably be a little bit more savvy about this group. "Charlie just seems to be in need of help all the time, he's a bit of a weakling, he's a cry-baby."

Monaghan says if there is one other thing he would do differently to Charlie, it would be to take more advantage of his rock star status.

"I think he should have made out with girls a lot more," says Monaghan, who is rumoured to be dating his Lost co-star Evangeline Lilly.

"I alway said that, I was like, this guy's a rock star, he's probably had the opportunity to be with cute girls more than someone like Jack would be who is a doctor - rock stars on any given night are surrounded by girls.

"So I was always saying that, but it never really came to fruition."
